To the Rescue !

I have a long history with dogs. When I was just a baby, my sister was bitten by an aunts white German Shepherd at a family gathering. The ensuing chaos left a tangible fear in my sister and me. She tended to not like dogs and I became petrified. Looking back in humor, I recall an embarrassing incident where a dachshund "treed " me on a picnic table during a picnic. Trust me when I tell you potato salad takes on a whole new life when it chock full of fat kid footprints.  However, even after that trauma or drama: I still wanted a dog of my own. I was relentless, every time my mom tortured me with trips to Lane Bryant...I in turn had to visit the puppies at the pathetic mall pet store. Only to leave dejected and puppy less.
Enter Cokey: When my grandmother could no longer bear my adorable pining for a dog. We got a bulletin board special. Cokey was a two year old Cocker Spaniel whose owner "didn't have enough time for him" apparently this was code for sick of his shit.  As we soon found out Cokey was semi bat-shit crazy.(not entirely his fault) but it was too late we loved him and he became the newest member of our loud Italian family. We had Cokey until I went away to College 13 years later.
After College I started to get the hankering for another dog. I went to "look" at a litter of black Labs. Of course it was love at first site and Eli became part of the family that evening, Years went by and I didn't think I could have a better dog. Then Eli had puppies. Ten beautiful purebred labs. I ended up keeping the runt. My sister named him Cosmo, after my great Uncle Cosmo(Freddie). He also was the youngest and smallest of my Grandmothers substantial pack of siblings. Needless to say those two dogs were inseparable. for 20 years those dogs were my constant companions until at the ripe old age of 14, Cosmo reunited with Eli at the big beach in the sky.
To the Rescue: What's the point of all this. I loved and enjoyed my purebred labs, but with age comes wisdom and perspective. There are so many unwanted dogs out there just waiting for the chance they deserve to unconditionally love their new human. All they want is a little food, a nice place to snuggle and be with us. They ask for so little but give so much and they do it with a wag of the tail! So this time around , my new family member will be a rescue. Whether it's from a shelter, breed rescue, or kill shelter rescue, I frankly don't know but I'm sure it will be love at first site.

Pet Rock 2013- Great Fun for a Great Cause

The whole gang at Scooper Troopers just wanted to say "Thank-You"  to all the folks who showed up to enjoy a beautiful day, listen to great music and have lots of fun for a great cause. I am proud to be a sponsor for the third annual Pet Rock in the Park with Rewind 100. Fun was had by all and lots of awareness and money were raised to combat Canine Cancer . Over thirty rescue dogs found their furever homes with multiple rescue organizations at the event! Along with great music from The Time Pilots and Scarab(a Journey Tribute band), we all got our '80's on at the bandstand but the party was a buzz with Dog Agility demonstrations, Police Dog demonstrations and puppies, puppies, puppies everywhere. Biddeford Mustang Rescue was there. What a great place. I'm going for a visit. Top it off with some great BBQ and who could ask for a better afternoon.

A Fat Boys Dog- Nice Story

I read this story on a blog the other day and wanted to share it. It really nails the theme of unconditional love shared with our four-legged friends. A twist on a boy and his dog story. Enjoy!

Summer Time Blues: Don't Cook Your Dog

98 degrees in the shade...real hot. In the Shade. Whenever, I think of summer, beaches BBq's and reggae parties come to mind. But truer word's have never been spoken than in these Reggae Classic lyrics "98 degrees" when it comes to leaving your dog in a hot car.
I know that all of you love your animals and I love taking my pooch with me for a ride, to the beach, wherever life takes us. However, I am amazed at how many times I see a dog, slow roasting in a hot car with the windows cracked an inch or two. Folks take a peek at the temperature chart and look at how fast the temperature in your car can fatally soar in a few minutes.  If you can't leave your dog with adequate ventilation an water , maybe we should leave them at home on these warm days while you do your errands. As summer rapidly approaches...something to think about to keep your furry friend safe and comfortable.
