Enter Cokey: When my grandmother could no longer bear my adorable pining for a dog. We got a bulletin board special. Cokey was a two year old Cocker Spaniel whose owner "didn't have enough time for him" apparently this was code for sick of his shit. As we soon found out Cokey was semi bat-shit crazy.(not entirely his fault) but it was too late we loved him and he became the newest member of our loud Italian family. We had Cokey until I went away to College 13 years later.
After College I started to get the hankering for another dog. I went to "look" at a litter of black Labs. Of course it was love at first site and Eli became part of the family that evening, Years went by and I didn't think I could have a better dog. Then Eli had puppies. Ten beautiful purebred labs. I ended up keeping the runt. My sister named him Cosmo, after my great Uncle Cosmo(Freddie). He also was the youngest and smallest of my Grandmothers substantial pack of siblings. Needless to say those two dogs were inseparable. for 20 years those dogs were my constant companions until at the ripe old age of 14, Cosmo reunited with Eli at the big beach in the sky.
To the Rescue: What's the point of all this. I loved and enjoyed my purebred labs, but with age comes wisdom and perspective. There are so many unwanted dogs out there just waiting for the chance they deserve to unconditionally love their new human. All they want is a little food, a nice place to snuggle and be with us. They ask for so little but give so much and they do it with a wag of the tail! So this time around , my new family member will be a rescue. Whether it's from a shelter, breed rescue, or kill shelter rescue, I frankly don't know but I'm sure it will be love at first site.
